On May 8th and 9th, 2026, the Municipality of Kalamata welcomes an international delegation of tour operators, travel designers and journalists as part of AdventureWEEK Peloponnese 2026, the most significant international tourism promotion initiative in the Peloponnese this year.
The delegation arrives from seven countries: the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Poland and the United Kingdom.
This is not a conventional press trip. AdventureWEEK is a carefully curated destination development programme, designed to connect international travel professionals with the authentic character of a place — its landscapes, its people, its food, its stories. Kalamata's participation as a co-organiser reflects the city's growing ambition as an internationally recognised destination for experiential and sustainable tourism.
What is AdventureWEEK Peloponnese 2026?
AdventureWEEK Peloponnese 2026 is a ten-day experiential journey across the Peloponnese, taking place from May 4th to 13th, 2026. It is organised by the Region of Peloponnese in strategic partnership with the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO/EOT) and the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) — the world's leading organisation for adventure and experiential tourism, with a presence in over 100 countries and a professional network of more than 30,000 industry members worldwide.
The programme covers two trail-based routes across 17 municipalities and five regional units, spanning a total of 1,400 kilometres. Along the way, participants encounter the full range of what the Peloponnese has to offer: mountainous terrain, UNESCO World Heritage monuments, Byzantine history, coastal landscapes, local producers, and the deep, unhurried hospitality of southern Greece.
The event brings together 18 international buyers representing over 25 travel brands, and 12 journalists writing for or contributing to some of the world's most influential media outlets — including BBC Travel, National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel+Leisure, The Guardian, The Times, Forbes France, and Vogue. Their combined media reach is estimated at approximately 30 million readers globally.
The ATTA: A Strategic Partnership of Global Significance
Founded in 1990, the Adventure Travel Trade Association is the world's premier professional body for adventure and outdoor tourism. It holds an official Memorandum of Understanding with UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO) and operates as an Affiliate Member — participating in research, policy development, and the creation of international standards for sustainable tourism.
AdventureWEEK is the ATTA's official destination development programme. Each year, it selects a small number of destinations worldwide to showcase through immersive, first-hand experience. Past editions have taken place in Cyprus, Tuscany, Okinawa (Japan), Québec (Canada), Switzerland, and Colombia, among others. The selection of the Peloponnese — and Kalamata as one of its anchor destinations — is a recognition of the region's potential on the global adventure travel map.
Kalamata's Role: Co-Organiser and Host City
The Municipality of Kalamata participates as a co-organiser of AdventureWEEK, hosting the delegation on the evening of May 8th and throughout the morning of May 9th. The experience has been designed to showcase the city's most authentic assets — its waterfront, its urban rhythm, its local market, and the producers and businesses that define the character of Messenian culture.
The morning programme on May 9th includes:
• A gathering at the harbour, where local sailing professionals and the seafront set the tone for what follows.
• A bicycle tour through the Railway Park and the city centre, moving at the pace of a place comfortable in its own skin.
• A stop at Aristomenous Street — the city's main commercial artery — and the Central Square.
• A visit to the historic Town Hall, home to the Visit Kalamata info point, the Local Products Exhibition, and interactive displays telling the story of Messenian culture and production.
• A stop at the Byzantine church of Agioi Apostoloi — one of the city's most significant historical monuments.
• A finale at the Farmers' Market, where local producers offer a direct, generous encounter with the food and flavours of the region.
• A light lunch with local products, bringing the morning to a close before the delegation continues its journey.
The programme has been developed in collaboration with local partners.
Why This Matters for Kalamata
The visiting delegation includes professionals who directly influence travel decisions for millions of people. Tour operators present will be evaluating the Peloponnese — and Kalamata specifically — as a destination for their future itineraries and product offerings. Journalists will be generating content for international publications with a combined readership of tens of millions.
This is targeted, high-value exposure. It is the kind of international visibility that cannot be purchased through conventional advertising — it emerges from genuine experience, genuine encounter, and the decision of a credible international organisation to include Kalamata in a programme of global significance.
For the Municipality of Kalamata, participation in AdventureWEEK 2026 is a concrete step in the long-term positioning of the city as an internationally recognised destination for experiential, sustainable, and year-round tourism. It is consistent with the strategic direction of the Visit Kalamata initiative and the Municipality's three-year Tourism Development Plan for the 2027–2029 period.
