Kalamata Castle

The Heritage

Built on a rocky hill on the city's northwestern side, the Castle of Kalamata has stood for centuries as its undisputed guardian. Its present form largely dates back to the Frankish period (13th century), when William II of Villehardouin transformed it into a powerful seat of the Principality of Achaea. It is believed that the acropolis of ancient Pharae was located on this same spot. The Castle withstood sieges, passed through the hands of Venetians and Ottomans, and remained a fortress until the Greek War of Independence of 1821.

The Legend

The Castle is inextricably linked to the legend of Princess Isabeau. Villehardouin's daughter, who was born here, became the symbol of romantic chivalry through Angelos Terzakis' famous novel. Walking along the walls, visitors can still feel the atmosphere of that era, where history blends with legend.
