Maria Callas Permanent Exhibition

The The Maria Callas Permanent Exhibition is the first organized exhibition dedicated to the legendary soprano, housed on the 3rd floor of Kalamata's Municipal Cultural Center, the historic "Pantazopouleios Laiki Scholi." Curated and maintained entirely by volunteers of the Maria Callas Alumni Association of the Music School of Kalamata, it offers visitors an intimate, personal perspective on Callas — not just the icon, but the woman behind the voice.

The collection includes seven personal letters from Callas's own archive, five photographs she had chosen for her private room in her Paris apartment on Rue Georges Mandel, autographs — including one signed in Kalamata by her pianist and close friend Robert Sutherland — a pair of her gloves, vintage magazines featuring her on the cover, opera programs, newspaper reviews, and a gold commemorative medal by sculptor Nikos Perantinos. The exhibits rotate regularly, so return visits reveal new material.

The exhibition first opened in December 2017 at the Music School of Kalamata with just seven letters. Following a landmark centennial show in 2023 — which brought Robert Sutherland himself to Kalamata as guest of honor — the collection earned a permanent home at the Cultural Center in December 2024. It continues to grow through donations from collectors and institutions worldwide.

She was born as Maria Anna Sophia Cecilia Kalogeropoulou but she is better known as Maria Callas or, as her musical and dramatic talents led to her being
hailed as "La Divina".
She was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century.
She was born in New York, from Greek parents. Her origins were from "Neoxorion" of Ithomi, in Messinia, near Kalamata.
She connected her name with the word "Opera" as no one else did, and she sang in the biggest and more important Theatres of the world, making her self a legend.
