Theater of Ancient Thouria

The theater of ancient Thouria was located in 2016 by archaeologist Xeni Arapoyanni at the highest point on the western side of the Hellenic ridge.

The monument is oriented to the west and spectators would have had a panoramic view of the Pamisos River valley and the Messinian Gulf. Part of the cavea with stone seats where spectators sat, the orchestra with a diameter of 16.30 meters, surrounded by a gutter for rainwater, as well as the scenography for storing the movable stage have been revealed.

In front of the scenography, three long and parallel stone grooves for the wheels of the sliding wooden stage were found. The theater dates back to the 3rd century BC. while after its abandonment, mainly during the early Christian and Byzantine years, it was used for the construction of workshops and spaces for agricultural use.
