Plane Tree at Agios Floros

Protected Monument of Nature (Government Gazette 589/B/1985)

In times of peace, the plane tree at Aghios Floros was a place of celebration and local fairs, but in periods of turmoil, it was often a place where klephts (brigands turned anti-Ottoman insurgents) were executed by hanging, including Ioannis Dikaios, the brother of Papaflessas.

The tree is also associated with the so-called ‘suffering of the infants’, according to which it is said that Theodoros Kolokotronis, when arriving at Agios Floros, saw six pitiful infants aged 5-7 months, hanging alive from the branches of the plane trees in the village, left there by the soldiers of Ibrahim Pasha to attract their mothers so that they could capture them.

• Details: The native range of the species is from Italy eastward as far as Iran. But it most likely originated east of the Balkans and appears to have arrived in Greece around 1000 BC, where it was able to adapt.
