Path connecting the villages of Agrilos and Poliani (W1 )

The path runs in the central and east part of the Prefecture of Messinía and connects the villages of Ágrilos and Polianí. These two settlements are yet another typical example of settlements with lots of seasonal emigrants in past decades, which means that in summer months the majority of the people of Ágrilos moved to the higher altitude of Polianí and returned in the winter. This seasonal transfer was made via the route described below.

Τhe path was opened in 1950-51 and replaced an earlier route in order to take a short cut between the two villages and help their communication. The path runs uphill from Ágrilos to the east, along the slopes of Mount Syrókas, and most of the route continues high above «Tzirórema,» one of the most impressive gorges of Messinía, which starts from the west slopes of northern Taýgetos range.

There are rich historical evidence and monuments in these areas. In the extensive, yet sparsely populated, settlement of Ágrilos the visitor can admire several old churches, some of which are remarkable Byzantine monuments built many centuries ago. However, Polianí is more famous as the birthplace of the monk Papafléssas (secular name: Grigórios Dikaíos), one of the greatest heroes of the Greek War of
Independence of 1821.
